Military Details: Bomber Command records suggest that he was killed on the raid on Leipzig in which 823 aircraft took part and in which 78 planes were lost.  "This was the heaviest Bomber Command loss of the war so far".

Lancaster JB609 took off from Wickenby at 23:23. Shot down by night fighters flown by Oblt. Hans-Heinz Augenstein of III/NJGI and crashed at 02:30am at Elspeet, Gelderland.
