Saturday 12th May 2012
Despite the adverse weather conditions prior to the event, the outfield was mown and the white lines were marked in preparation for the return of the OSA to St Julian’s Lane. Saturday brought clear skies and bright sunshine - perfect conditions for the traditional OSA vs Headmasters Select XI cricket and the newly formed OSA round-robin rounders.
Cricket
The 2012 Headmaster’s Select XI comprised of the school’s current Under16s, winners of the Southern Area Cricket League 2009/10. The OSA fielded a team which consisted of 4 decades of Old Shorehamer’s. The OSA won the toss and put the Headmaster’s Select XI in to bat.
Max Gardiner opened the batting and scored 12 runs off the bat before being trapped LBW to James Cox. Jack Woods top scored with 49 runs and batted for most of the innings before being bowled by Ishan Patel. Head Boy John Williams scored 10 runs before loosing his wicket to a well taken catch by Jon Guy. The first innings concluded when Bob White caught his son Luke, behind the wicket. The Headmaster’s Select XI set a target of 132 after being bowled out for 131. Ishan Patel finished with three wickets for 10 runs from three overs and James Cox two for 14 from three overs. Stuart Allcock, Jon Guy, Hassan Rajwani, Zulfi Rajwani and Mr Shelley all claimed a wicket each.
After a delicious tea, kindly provided by the College, the OSA team set out to chase the 132 runs needed to win. Mr Edlin and Kevin Upton opened the batting. Both openers started well at a rate of 5 an over. Mr Edlin scored 13 runs including a six before being given out LBW to the bowling of Callum Ritchie. Kevin Upton showed off some impressive batting skills and scored 17 runs before being caught out by James Hardy. James Luto top scored for the Old Shorehamer’s with 28 runs before being caught on the boundary by Jake Robinson. There were some big sixes hit by James Cox and Jon Guy as the OSA piled on the runs. The pairing of Bob White and Jon Guy reached the required runs with a partnership of 40 not out. On the bowling side, Callum Ritchie finished after five overs for 17 runs including a wicket maiden and James Hardy took two wickets from two overs. At the end of a very enjoyable and entertaining afternoon of cricket, the OSA team won by six wickets.
Thank you to our cricket umpires Peter Walker and Stephen Williams.

Rounders
The rounders competition saw four teams competing in a round-robin event. The teams comprised of: a younger OSA team, an older OSA team, current students and a staff team.
The younger OSA team comprised of last year’s leavers and they still displayed a strong and competitive streak. The older OSA team brought together two of the Van der Kleij sisters (Amy and Tessa) and younger sister Holly also had a hit later on in the day. The current Shorehamers displayed good team spirit. The staff team, some of whom had not played rounders since they were at school, displayed strong competiveness which saw them become overall winners of the competition (results to follow).
The players and spectators had a fun and enjoyable afternoon of rounders with beautiful weather, four excellent teams, good team spirit and smiles and laughter all around. Thank you to Mrs Liley, Mrs Kirby, Nancy Hall and Libby Davis Smith for agreeing to umpire, which was challenging at times!

Open House and BBQ
Several Old Shorehamers came along to watch and support the teams and to have tours around the College. The afternoon then culminated in a substantial barbeque for those who managed to brave the increasing cold wind and disappearing sun. But a very enjoyable day was had by all!
My thanks go to James Cox for helping me organise the event, the PE Department for organising the teams, the staff who played, Mr Court for taking photos, Mr Milner for preparing the grounds so well after all the rain, the kitchen staff for the sumptuous afternoon tea and barbeque, the parents and friends who supported, and the College for hosting the event.
